2 Rotten Row Riseley
2 Rotten Row April 2015
2 Rotten Row was listed by the former Department of Environment in June 1974 as Grade II, of special interest. The cottage dates from the 17th century and is built of colour-washed roughcast over a timber frame with a thatched roof. It comprises one storey and attics, has a 20th century porch and a one storey addition lean-to addition to the rear.
The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C215/95] found that it was owned by G F Symonds and occupied by E Brown whose rent was £5 per annum for a living room, a kitchen and two bedrooms. A weather-boarded and tiled barn stood outside. The valuer noted that the cottage had previously been two dwellings, presumably with one room and one down in each.
