14 and 16 Church Lane Riseley

14 and 16 Church Lane April 2015
14 and 16 Church Lane April 2015

14 and 16 Church Lane was listed by the former Department of Environment in June 1974 as Grade II, of special interest. It is a timber-framed building covered in colour-washed roughcast render and has a thatched roof. It comprises one storey and attics. A single storey flat-roof extension lies at the south-west gable end.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C215/122] found that it was owned by a Mrs Beeby and tenanted by A Bass who paid rent of £4 per annum. The cottage comprised a living room, a kitchen and two bedrooms. A weather-boarded and tiled barn and pigsty stood outside. The valuer commented: "Just done up and rethatched".
