22 and 23 School Lane March 2008

22 and 23 School Lane is a pair of red brick semi-detached Whitbread Estate cottages. They were built by the Estate in 1896 and are built in a U shape with a verandah in the centre around the two front doors.

In 1927 Southill was valued under the Rating Valuation Act 1925; every piece of land and building in the country was assessed to determine the rates to be paid on it. The valuer visiting 22 and 23 School Lane [DV1/C32/105-106] noted that the houses were owned by the Whitbread Estate and occupied by G.Franks and Joseph Simms respectively, at respective rents of £17/6/- and £6/1/6 per annum. Both dwellings comprised a parlour and kitchen with two bedrooms above; outside was a barn with a copper for boiling water and a wood and tile scullery.
