Thurleigh Castle

The Bedfordshire Historic Environment Record [HER] contains information on the county’s historic buildings and landscapes and summaries of each entry can now be found online as part of the Heritage Gateway website. The description of Thurleigh Castle, or Bury Hill, [HER 994] is of a slightly oval moat, about 60 metres across. The moat ditch is about 7 metres wide and up to 3 metres deep. The central island is surrounded by a bank 1.5 metres high. A small area of flat ground in the middle of the island measures about 25 metres by 20 metres. There are no causeways across the moat. The eastern side of the moat holds standing water and is fed by a stream. The buildings would, presumably, have stood on the island area surrounded by the moat
