Lakeside Cottage Old Warden

Lakeside Cottage about 1900
Lakeside Cottage about 1900 [Z50/129/84]

Lakeside Cottage lies in the grounds of Old Warden Park just north of the long, thin lake and south of Warden Road, not far from Ickwell Lodge. It was listed by the former Department of Environment as Grade II, of special interest. It was built by the Ongley Estate in the 18th century and has 19th century additions and alterations, i.e. probably by the Shuttleworth Estate. It is of timber-framed construction with a colour-washed rough-cast render over it. There is a mottled red brick addition to the north and the roof is of clay tiles. The building has a two room plan of one storey and attics.

In 1872 Old Warden Park was sold by Robert, 3rd Baron Ongley by private contract to Joseph Shuttleworth. The sale catalogue of the time [X65/61] noted that Lakeside Cottage, described as "Ornamental Cottage and Garden at the Kennels by Fishpond" was in occupation of George Radford at two guineas a year rent.
