8 Mill Road - Waterfall Cottage January 2015

8 Mill Road was listed by English Heritage in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. The cottage dates from the 17th century and has a timber-frame with colour washed plaster render. The original cottage has three rooms downstairs and comprised one storey and attics beneath a thatched roof. There is a single storey weather-boarded and thatched extension on the south gable end.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 legislated that every piece of land and building in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Thurleigh, like most of the county was assessed in 1927. The valuer visiting this cottage [DV1/C73/1] found it owned by W. Hartop and occupied by J. Farrer who paid rent pf £6/10/- per annum for a parlour, a living room and a kitchen with three bedrooms above. There was also a dairy, a mixing shed, a two-bay hovel and a large pigsty. The valuer commented:"Miles out".
