Winters Moon - 7 Church Road Wilshamstead
7 Church Road March 2012
Winter’s Moon is a delightful cottage in Church Road. It was listed by the former Department of Environment in June 1974 as Grade II, of special interest. Like the next door cottage it is not particularly old, dating from around 1800.
The cottage is partly constructed from colourwashed roughcast over a timber frame with a thatched roof and partly from colourwashed brick with a clay tile roof. The tiled, right hand bay is probably a later addition.
The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Like most of the county, Wilshamstead was largely assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C66/66] found that it was owned and occupied by A. Tuffnell. His accommodation comprised a parlour, a living room and a kitchen with three bedrooms above.
