8 Church Road March 2012

8 Church Road is an attractive cottage set end-on to the road. It was listed by the former Department of Environment in June 1974 as Grade II, of special interest. It dates from later than one might initially think, having been built about 1800. It is constructed of colourwashed roughcast over a timber frame which has been “much restored” and comprises one storey and attics beneath a thatched roof. The listing notes: Included for group value”.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Like most of the county, Wilshamstead was largely assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C66/67] found that it was owned by W. Tuffnell and occupied by T. Tuffnell. Accommodation comprised a living room, a kitchen and a bedroom (“in two parts”) in the attics.
