5 to 11 The Green in 1962
5 to 11 The Green in 1962 [Z53/54/16]

Numbers 5 to 11 The Green were listed by the former Department of Environment in 1964 as Grade II (of special interest). They are 18th century in origin and are built, like most of the older properties in Harrold, of coursed limestone rubble. They have thatched roofs and comprise two storeys.

In 1927 property in Harrold was valued under the Rating Valuation Act of 1925; every piece of land and building in the country had to be valued to determine the rates to be paid upon it. The valuer visiting this row noted that the owner was John Fairey le Fevre. Individual dwelling details were as follows:

5 The Green [DV1/C71/110]: occupier Caleb le Fevre (appropriately it is now named Caleb Cottage). It comprised a living room, parlour, pantry, scullery downstairs with two bedrooms and a boxroom above. It had no garden. The valuer remarked: "Very low roof". A Caleb le Fevre junior is listed in directories from 1890 to 1920 as Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths for Harrold Sub-District. This may be him, living in retirement, or another member of the family.He was also listed in earlier directories as a butcher.

7 The Green [DV1/C71/111]: occupier G.Clayson senior. It was a small dwelling comprising just a living room, scullery and pantry downstairs, with one bedroom above.

9 The Green [DV1/C71/112]: occupier Mrs.S.Askew. The dwelling comprised a living room, kitchen and scullery downstairs, with two bedrooms above. Outside lay a barn, but no garden. The valuer noted that over a passageway was a further 3½ feet by 18 feet of space.

11 The Green [DV1/C71/113]: occupier J.R.Waller. The property comprised a living room, kitchen and scullery downstairs, with two bedrooms above. A washhouse lay outside.
