4 Dove Lane Harrold

4 Dove Lane May 2008
4 Dove Lane in May 2008

4 Dove Lane was listed by the former Department of Environment as Grade II (of special interest), they described it as early 19th century. It is, like most of the older properties in Harrold, constructed of coursed limestone rubble. It now has a concrete tile roof. The house has three storeys, each with sash windows. Later two storey extensions have been made to east and west.

In 1927 property in Harrold was valued under the Rating Valuation Act of 1925; every piece of land and building in the country had to be valued to determine the rates to be paid upon it. The valuer visiting 4 Dove Lane [DV1/C71/47], described as Westfield, noted that the owner and occupier was H.Chapman. It comprised two reception rooms, a kitchen and a pantry on the ground floor. On the first floor were three bedrooms, with two attic bedrooms ("good") above. Outside was a stone and slate paint shop with a loft over, an earth closet, a lean-to tool house, and a brick and tile truck shed.

Kelly's Directory confirms what one would suspect from this description. Harry Chapman was a painter (of buildings, presumably, rather than in oils or watercolours).
