31 Brook Lane Harrold

31 Brook Lane June 2008
31 Brook Lane in June 2008

This building was listed by the former Department of Environment as Grade II (of special interest). It was considered to be 17th century, like its semi-detached neighbour Number 29. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and has a thatched roof and has one storey with attics. It stands with its gable end to the road.

In 1927 property in Harrold was valued under the Rating & Valuation Act of 1925; every piece of land and building in the country had to be valued to determine the rates to be paid upon it. The valuer visiting Number 31 [DV1/C70/112] noted that the owner was H.Real and the occupier J.Roberts. The cottage comprised a living room and kitchen with a range downstairs and two bedrooms in the attics; outside were a barn, earth closet and "fair" garden; water fetched from 200 yards away leading the valuer to note: "no water inside - bad".
