2 Brook Lane Harrold

2 Brook Lane in 1962
2 Brook Lane in 1962 [Z53/54/41]

This building was listed by the former Department of Environment as Grade II (of special interest). It was considered to be late 17th or early 18th century. It is built of coursed limestone rubble and has a thatched roof. The cottage has a single storey with attics and it stands with its gable end to the road.

In 1927 property in Harrold was valued under the Rating & Valuation Act of 1925; every piece of land and building in the country had to be valued to determine the rates to be paid upon it. The valuer visiting 2 Brook Lane [DV1/C70/147] noted that the owner was Mrs.Richardson and the occupier C.Carter, who paid £6 per annum rent. The cottage comprised a living room, kitchen and scullery downstairs with two bedrooms in the attics above; outside were two barns, an earth closet and a small garden. The valuer noted "very low roof".
