29 Brook Lane Harrold

29 Brook Lane in 1962 [Z53/54/43]

This building was listed by the former Department of Environment as Grade II (of special interest). It was considered to be 17th century. It is built of coursed limestone rubble, which has been partly rendered, and has a thatched roof. Like the other older buildings in Brook Lane (2, 21-27 and 31) it stands gable end on to the road. The cottage has a single storey with attics. It is semi-detached with Number 31.

In 1927 property in Harrold was valued under the Rating & Valuation Act of 1925; every piece of land and building in the country had to be valued to determine the rates to be paid upon it. The valuer visiting 29 Brook End [DV1/C70/111] noted that the owner was a Mrs.Webb and the occupier H.Webb; the cottage comprised a living room, kitchen and two pantries downstairs with three bedrooms in the attics, and two "good" and a "fair garden" outside; water came from a well. The valuer further noted: "very low roof".
