1841 Census for Totternhoe
Historians of Totternhoe are lucky in that a detailed map showing the Brownlow Estate in 1840 [BW1006a] has survived with its accompanying reference book detailing all the land holdings on the estate. Of most interest, perhaps, is that fact that each house in the village is marked, together with a description of the area of the property and the name of the person who inhabited it. As this is only a year before the 1841 census one can use the two sources together to arrive at some idea of who was living in which house together with details of their families. Unfortunately there is not a direct correlation, perhaps because the tenants given in the 1840 reference book are taken from data some years out of date combined with the fact that some people were out when the census enumerator called; so some of what is below is, inevitably, guess work.
The numbers below tie in with the numbers on the maps. People not born in Bedfordshire as shown in italics. To see a larger version of the map at the head of each section please click on it.
