Rose Cottage was formerly a Grade III listed building but, since that grade was abolished it has remained un-listed. It probably dates from the 17th century, is timber-framed with colour-washed plaster and has a thatched roof covering a single storey with attics.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C213/2] found it owned and occupied by J Stapleton. It stood in just under a rood of land and comprised a reception room, a living room, a kitchen and one other downstairs room which “was shop”. There were three bedrooms upstairs. Two wood and tiled store barns stood outside. The valuer commented: “Very nice”.
