Stotfold Riots - Saturday
Information taken from The Stotfold Riot by Bert Hyde.
Saturday
Accordingly on Saturday morning a consideable number of special constables were sworn from the neighbouring vilages, by Mr Whitbread and the Rev. John Hall (Rector of Shillington and Stondon), another county magistrate, and intimation of the affray having been communicated to the Lord Lieutenant, he very judiciously despatched upwards of 100 constables to assist Mr Whitbread, if necessary. With this combined force, after every necessary arrangement had been made, assigning to different individuals the several parts of their duty, the magistrates proceeded to Stotfold and in little more that half an hour, ten of the ringleaders were apprehended and forthwith committed to the county gaol, to await a further investigation into this lamentable affair.
