Manor Court Roll [L26/251]

These surviving medieval court rolls for the Manor of Campton-cum-Shefford [L26/251] are divided into sections for the two separate settlements, only the transcribed and translated entries for Shefford are included below - sums in brackets are the amount the person was fined:

William Blanchard, William Travayll, Thomas Barker, Robert Oxeford, William Barbour, John Barbour, John Smyth, William Coupere, John Dyndeseye, John Borewell, Hugh Spycer, John Parson senior, the homage [i.e. the jury] present that the Prior of Wymondley (2d), Thomas Clement (6d), William Goodhewn (2) owe suit and have defaulted.

Henry Prudde (4d), William Travaylle (4d), Thomas Baker (6d), Richard Merston (4d) are common bakers and infringe the assize of bread [i.e. the bread was sold at short weight, or contained impurities or some other such misdemeanour. Some consider that this was a legal fiction and what is actually going on here is, in effect, granting a licence to practise their trade]

John Smyth (4d), Roger Puttoks (6d deleted), Henry Prudde (4d), George Lamberd (6d), William Ropere (6d), John Bocher (6d), William Travaylle (4d), William Blanchard (4d), William Coupere (4d), John Corner (4d)

Total: 5 shillings 4 pence

Richard Busshe (6d), William Barbour (4d), Henry Pottere (6d), William Fuller (6d), Richard Hunte (6d), William Raundes (6d), Robert Parson (6d), John Parson senior (6d), John Tayllour (6d), William Ropere (4d), John Parson junior (6d), John Dendeseye (4d), Thomas Dysshere (6d), Margaret Middeltun (6d), Thomas Baker (6d), Hugh Spycer (4d), Alice Somertune (6d), Thomas Aylmer (4d), Richard Mersston (4d), John Barbour (4d), John Borewell (4d) Richard Bocher (6d): are all common brewers and have infringed the assize of beer.

Total: 8 shillings 10 pence [sic]

John Parsone junior (2d), Hugh Cook (2d), John Larke (2d), Robert Saltwell (2d) John Knotte (2d), John Bocher of Broom (2d), Robert Chyboll (2d), are butchers and sell at excessive prices.

Thomas Camylgye (4d), John Anable (2d), John Gerard (2d), John Felyps (2d), Richard Hamond (2d) are sellers of fish and have taken excessive profits contrary to the statute.

Total: 2 shillings 2 pence.

John Parson (4d) junior assaulted Richard Bocher contrary to the King's peace.

The same John fined for bloodshed in the struggle against Richard Bocher, contrary to the King's peace (4d).

John Parson (2d) has illegally recovered from John Chambleyne what was taken in distraint.

Thomas (3d) servant of William Dyndeseye assaulted John Talbot contrary to the King's peace.

Henry Prudde (2d) has a dung heap lying in the King's highway.

Thomas Lounde and Walter his son have ploughed the common right of way up to the adjoining meadow of the lord's.

Total: 19 pence.

Expenses of steward and of all the other visitors: 2 shillings 2 pence.

Sum of this leet: 15 shillings11 pence.
