15 Ickwell Green April 2009

15 Ickwell Green was listed by the former Department of Environment in March 1985 as Grade II, of special interest. The department dated the property to about 1700. It is built of colour washed roughcast over a timber frame and has a thatched roof, one storey and attics. To the west end the roof is hipped, over a later single storey addition, with a single storey 20th century lean-to addition against this. To the east is a 20th century garage addition.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Ickwell was assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting 15 Ickwell Green [DV1/C44/86] found it owned by Josiah Bowler and occupied by James Watts who had paid £6 per annum in rent since 1914.

Accommodation comprised a parlour, living room and combined kitchen and scullery with two bedrooms above. An earth closet, a coal shed and a wood shed stood outside. The garden was described as fair and water came from an outside tap.

In 2013 the property was for sale. The particulars [Z449/6/25] detailed, on the ground floor: a dining room measuring 14 feet 7 inches by 14 feet 4 inches; a sitting room measuring 17 feet 7 inches by 14 feet 7 inches; a utility room; a W. C.; a breakfast room measuring 15 feet 3 inches by 12 feet 7 inches; a kitchen measuring 15 feet 3 inches by 11 feet 1 inch and a garden room measuring 13 feet 9 inches by 11 feet 4 inches. The first floor comprised: a W. C.; a bathroom and three bedrooms measuring, respectively: 15 feet 5 inches by 12 feet 6 inches; 14 feet 5 inches by 10 feet 2 inches and 10 feet 2 inches by 9 feet 8 inches. Outside were: a driveway; parking; a store/workshop; a thatched gazebo; a garage and an oil storage tank.
