Bedfordshire County Council became Local Education Authority for the county in 1903, following the Education Act 1902. In 1904 the CountySurveyor reported on the condition of all the council and voluntary schools in the county under LEA control, excluding those on Bedford and Luton Boroughs which had their own executive arrangements. The surveyor's report [E/SA2/1/1] took the form below.

These are beautiful buildings, built of sand stone walling, with free stone quoins, windows, doors and copings, and Brozely tile roofs, very substantial and provided with every necessity for perfect equipment, standing within well-fenced, paved and grass lawn grounds, beautifully kept.

School Room
This is divided by a partly-glazed framed partition, into the following sizes: -
30 feet by 18 feet by 14 feet
16 feet by 18 feet by 14 feet
It is very amply lighted, also warmed by Manchester grates, and well-ventilated by fresh-air flues, and window board inlets.

These are very capacious, well paved and lighted, and provided with lavatory basins and water supply by cistern over.

These are perfectly constructed with earth closet apparatus, for excreta and urine, with the necessary adjuncts for dry earth, cleansing and renewal

A Coal Barn is provided
These premises are perfectly clean, inodorous and scrupulously tended. They are throughout an “ideal block of schools and offices”.
