Baptists in Roxton

The only reference to Baptists in Roxton is in 1753 when the dwellinghouse of Paul Freshwater was registered with the Archdeaconry of Bedford [ABN1/1 and ABN2/3] by Thomas Craner of Blunham and Samuel Butler of Bedford, wheelwright. Craner was Baptist minister at Blunham.

In the middle of the 19th century the secular authorities wished to know how many people in the country attended worship and the rough proportions for each denomination. Thus a census of worshippers was held on Sunday 30th March 1851, known as the Ecclesiastical Census. There is no entry for a Baptist meeting in Roxton and so one can conclude that it had ended by this date..
