193 Wilstead Road Elstow
193 Wilstead Road February 2012
193 Wilstead Road was listed by English Heritage in May 1984 as Grade II, of special interest. The house dates from the 17th century and is timber-framed with colour-washed roughcast render in front and brick casing on the north gable. It comprises two storeys beneath a clay tiled roof. There is a large 20th century extension at the rear.
The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Elstow, like much of the county, was assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting 193 Wilstead Road [DV1/C33/36] found that it, like most of the parish, was owned by Lord of the Manor Samuel Howard Whitbread.
The tenant, Joseph Burr, worked for the Whitbread Estate. His accommodation comprised two living rooms and one bedroom downstairs, two bedrooms and a game larder upstairs. Outside stood a washhouse measuring 14 feet by 13 feet. The valuer commented: “very low property”.
