35 Main Road Biddenham

35 Main Road in 1962 [Z53/15/10]

35 Main Road was listed by English Heritage in August 1987 as Grade II, of special interest. It dates from the 18th century and is constructed from colourwashed plaster over a timber frame. The chimney is built of limestone rubble and the roof is thatched. The cottage originally had two rooms downstairs with beds in the attics. The porch is modern.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting 35 Main Road [DV1/C123/51] found that it was, like many of the older properties in the village, owned by the Wingfield family, Lords of the Manor of Biddenham.

The occupier may have been W. Tebbutt but the valuer was not sure, having written: “No one in 31/1/27”. Accommodation comprised a kitchen and a living room downstairs with two bedrooms above. The valuer considered in “very poor” but noted: “Being Thatched”.
