Wootton Church Henman Collection

Wootton Church, 1900s [ref: glass slide from Henman Collection at Bedford Central Library]

There was a church in the village by the mid 12th century and the list of incumbents goes back to 1251. The present building dates from the early 14th century; the south porch was added later in the 14th century while the top of the tower dates from the 15th century. In the chancel there are memorials and hatchments to the Monoux and Payne families.

Major church repairs were carried out after Reverend Neale became vicar in 1852, mostly at his own expense. The organ was restored and improved for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Recent works carried out since 1959 include the re-leading of the spire, organ repairs and a new roof covering on the nave and aisles.
