The glebe terrier of Great Barford Church of 4th July 1822 has an interesting section on the maintenance of the Parish Clerk. "There is due to the Parish Clerk from every Cottage Fourpence a Year, and from Other Houses and Farms the following annual Payments, that is to say":

  • "from Birchfield farms the property of John Polhill Esquire Two Shillings and Sixpence and Thirty Eggs";
  • "from Mary Grant Farm one shilling and sixpence and Tenn Eggs";
  • "from the Manor Farm belonging to C. J. Metcalfe Esquire and from the Pound Farm, Two shillings and twenty eggs each";
  • "from George Rowles Farm, the Rectory House and Rectory Farm House, two shillings and sixpence each";
  • "from Greenend Farm the property of C. J. Metcalfe Esquire and from Thomas Emery and Mary Halsey Farms, and from the White Hart and Anchor Inns one shilling and sixpence each";
  • "from Greenend Farm the property of William Franklin Esquire three shillings and Twopence";
  • "from the Farm of William Pedley Esquire Four shillings and sixpence";
  • "from the Great Tithes Five Shillings";
  • "from the Brewers Company two Shillings";
  • "from Thomas Hart Farm Tenpence";
  • "from John Barcock and Joseph Humbley One shilling each";
  • "For every Wedding by publishing of Banns, two shillings and sixpence".

This suggests an absolute minimum of £2 per annum.
