27 or 29 Green End Road Great Barford
27 Green End Road March 2010
This thatched cottage has been numbered as both 27 and 29 Green End Road at different times. It was listed by the former Department of Environment in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. The department dated the cottage to about 1700 and it is constructed of colour washed roughcast over a timber frame. The cottage has a single storey with attics. A 20th century flat roofed extension projects southwards from the west elevation.
The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Most of Bedfordshire was valued in 1927 and the valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C125/26] found it owned and occupied by John Grace Taylor who had purchased it for £165 in 1926.
The house comprised a parlour with a grate, a living room with a range and a downstairs bedroom with three further bedrooms in the attic. A coal and wood barn together with an earth closet stood outside. Water came from a well.
