Alban Middle School March 2010

In the 1970s Bedfordshire County Council introduced comprehensive education, doing away with the 11+ examination and grammar schools and introducing a tier of school between the old County Primary and County Secondary Schools. Thus Lower Schools now taught children aged 4 to 9, Middle Schools from 9 to 13 and UpperSchools from 13 onwards.

Great Barford Middle School opened in September 1976 in a purpose built school in Silver Street, though it was not officially opened until 13th June 1977 following a decision by the school governors to rename the school Alban Middle School. The school was designated a voluntary aided school because there were six voluntary aided and four voluntary controlled lower schools in the area.

The school has room for 480 children. It has a catchment area extending from Great Barford to Blunham, Mogerhanger, Ravensden, Renhold, Roxton, Wilden and Willington. The school became the base for the Diocesan Religious Education Adviser on 2000 [DSA/Pu1/2/23/11].
