2 and 3 The Square about 1927 [Z1130/3a/9]

3 The Square Aspley Guise has been a ladies' hairdressers since the 1970s. It is currently [2010] for sale. The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed as to its rateable value. Aspley Guise was assessed in 1927. The valuer visiting 3 The Square discovered that it was owned and occupied by Florence Tripp, who ran a tobacconist's business [DV1/C138/38]. She is first mentioned in Kelly's Directory for Bedfordshire for 1928 (having not been in the previous edition, that for 1924) and is last mentioned in the final Kelly's for Bedfordshire, that of 1940.

The brick and tiled semi-detached building comprised a shop measuring 10 feet by 12 feet 6 inches with a bay measuring 5 feet by 6 feet 6 inches, a living room measuring 10 feet 6 inches by 11 feet 6 inches with a bay measuring 5 feet 6 inches by 2 feet 9 inches, a kitchen measuring 11 feet 6 inches by 8 feet and a washhouse. There was also a cellar.

Four bedrooms stood upstairs measuring 11 feet 9 inches by 7 feet, 14 feet by 12 feet, 12 feet by 8 feet and 11 feet by 7 feet 6 inches. The valuer commented: "No stock rooms anywhere, very cramped for space".
