Roman Coins Found in Souldrop

The Bedfordshire Historic Environment Record [HER] contains information on the county’s historic buildings and landscapes and summaries of each entry can now be found online as part of the Heritage Gateway website. In recent years a large number of Roman coins have been found by metal detectorists in Souldrop.

  • A small, worn, copper coin of the 3rd or 4th centuries [HER 19497]
  • A small, worn, copper coin of the 3rd or 4th centuries [HER 19498]
  • A small, worn, copper coin of the 3rd or 4th centuries [HER 19499]
  • A small, worn, copper coin of the 3rd or 4th centuries [HER 19500]
  • A copper radiate – perhaps a contemporary forgery of a coin of Claudius II Gothicus (268-270) [HER 19742]
  • A silver denarius of Trajan (98-117) dating to the years 98 and 99 and found in December 2010 [HER 19748]
  • A copper coin of Constantine (307-337) found in November 2009 [HER 20087]
  • A corroded contemporary forgery of the late 3rd century, the reverse possibly saying PIETAS AUGUSTOR (“the piety of the emperors”) found in May 2009 [HER 20174]
  • A copper coin of Valentinian I (364-375) or his brother Valens (367-378) minted at Arles between 364 and 367 and reading SECURITAS REIPUBLICAE (“security for the republic”) found in May 2009 [HER 20175]
  • A corroded contemporary forgery of the late 3rd century found in May 2009 [HER 20177]
  • A small, worn copper coin of 3rd to 5th centuries found in May 2009 [HER 20178]
  • A small, worn copper coin of the mid or late 4th century found in May 2009 [HER 20179]

  • A silver siliqua (which had been clipped to remove some of the excess silver round the edge for melting down) of Valens (364-378) found in May 2009 [HER 20183]

  • A worn copper as (sixteen of these to a denarius) of the 1st or 2nd century found in May 2009 [HER 20185]
  • A worn copper as (of the 1st or 2nd century found in May 2009 [HER 20186]
  • A corroded contemporary forgery of the late 3rd century found in March 2009 [HER 20208]
  • A small corroded copper coin from the 4th or 5th century found in March 2009 [HER 20209]
  • A silver siliqua of Gratianus (367-383) struck in Trier between 378 and 383 reading VIRTIS ROMANORUM (“virtue of the Romans”) and found in September 2009 [HER 20229]
  • A small, worn, copper coin of the 4th century found in November 2008 [HER 20231]
