2 High Street - Ridgmont Lodge January 2011

Ridgmont Lodge stands at the entrance to Woburn Park at the junction of the High Street and Crawley Road. Unlike Crawley Lodge it was not listed by the former Department of Environment.

The Bedfordshire Historic Environment Record [HER] contains information on the county's historic buildings and landscapes and summaries of each entry can now be found online as part of the Heritage Gateway website. The entry for the lodge [HER 14429]notes that it was built in 1845 in red brick, with a tiled roof.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the lodge [DV1/C140/36] discovered that the tenant and gate keeper was James Mellett. His accommodation comprised a sitting room, a kitchen, a pantry and two bedrooms.
