Bedfordshire County Council became Local Education Authority for the county in 1903, following the Education Act 1902. In 1904 the County Surveyor reported on the condition of all the council and voluntary schools in the county under LEA control, excluding those on Bedford and Luton Boroughs which had their own executive arrangements. The surveyor's report [E/SA2/1/1]] took the form below.

Eggington School (Council)

This is a small brick and tile building, substantially built, but needing repairs, and improved sanitary conveniences.

Main Room – 27 feet 9 inches by 17 feet 3 inches by 11 feet to 17 feet 3 inches.

Lighting by five windows, is very fair.

Ventilation by four opening lights and outlets in Gable. More lights should be made to open for Summer use.

Three Tobin Tubes and an Exhaust ventilator are necessary.

Heating by an open fire. A new projecting fire grate and deflecting fire brick back should be provided, to send heat into room; and all left sound and in perfect working order.

Class Room – 14 feet by 12 feet by 11 feet to 17 feet.

Lighting by three windows, which are sufficient.

Ventilation by three opening lights which need repairing and leaving sound, also one gable opening.

Three Tobin Tubes and an Exhaust Ventilator are necessary.

Heating by an open fire. The stone hearth needs repairing.

Lobby – 12 feet 9 inches by 6 feet 6 inches by 8 feet 6 inches.

Window light is sufficient. More ventilation is necessary.

All above need cleansing, repairing, whitening, colouring, painting, stain and varnish work renewing, doors, windows, fastenings and floors renewing, and all leaving sound and perfect.

Offices

These are very foul, common privies giving off dangerous effluvia. They are too near the School windows and should be cleared away and a proper block of earth closet buildings erected, with dry earth house and barn. The large ash pit should be abandoned, and a Sanitary ash bin provided.

Water Supply

No water or Lavatories are on the premises.

Two portable lavatory stands complete should be provided.

Playgrounds

The surface of this needs making good.

External Repairs

These are necessary to the School buildings and fences.
