15 to 19 Cranfield Road are attractive properties and different from anything else in Wootton. The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Like most of the county, Wootton was largely assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting the row of three [DV1/C50/64-66] found they were all owned by Miss Whitehouse.

Accommodation was identical in all three: a living room and front room downstairs with two bedrooms above; a barn and earth closet stood outside. Water came from a well one hundred yards away but the valuer commented: “Very fair cottages and good gardens”.

The tenants were:

  • 15: L. Luck, paying 31/4/6 per quarter, set in 1918;
  • 17: A. Robertson, paying £6/5/- per annum, set in 1923;
  • 19. E. Low, paying £5/12/- per annum, set in 1920.
