Bedfordshire County Council became Local Education Authority for the county in 1903, following the Education Act 1902. In 1904 the County Surveyor reported on the condition of all the council and voluntary schools in the county under LEA control, excluding those on Bedford and Luton Boroughs which had their own executive arrangements. The surveyor's report [E/SA2/1/1]] took the form below.

MILTON BRYAN SCHOOL AND HOUSE (CHURCH)

These are good Brick, Stone and Tiled buildings. The rooms measure as follows:

Main Room - 24 feet by 16 feet by 10 feet to plate and 9 feet open roof.

Infants’ Room – 24 feet by 16 feet by 10 feet to plate and 9 feet open roof.

There are five windows, portions of which open for ventilation, two gable lights also open.

The walls and ceilings need repairing, cleaning and colouring, and the paint renewing as before. Stained and varnished work requires touching up.

The floor is worn, but will last some time.

Class Room (see Note under House).

These Rooms need better ventilating; providing six Tobin air inlets, and two Exhaust Ventilators.

Lobbies

These need renovating. The floors are badly worn.

External Repairs and Painting

These have been recently done.

Offices

These are clean and in very good order. They are well built for the pail closet plan, and easy of access. A specially constructed urinal receiver on wheels is also provided. All vessels are neatly fitted, and show no signs of abuse or difficulty in securing perfect cleanliness. This is an excellent set of offices for a small school, showing good tending.

No Lavatory is provided.

House

The House, which is very old, provides a Class Room which is very poor and badly lighted and ventilated (14 feet 3 inches by 9 feet 6 inches by 10 feet 9 inches) to the School, off Porch.

The House portion comprises the following: -

Sitting Room 15 feet 8 inches by 14 feet 3 inches by 6 feet 6 inches
Sitting Room 11 feet by 10 feet 6 inches by 6 feet 6 inches
Kitchen 12 feet 4 inches by 10 feet 3 inches by 6 feet 10 inches
Scullery 11 feet by 6 feet by 7 feet
Larder 9 feet 3 inches by 10 feet by 6 feet 8 inches
Bedrooms   15 feet by 10 feet 3 inches by 7 feet 6 inches
10 feet by 14 feet by 6 feet 9 inches
11 feet by 11 feet by 6 feet 9 inches
11 feet by 11 feet by 6 feet 9 inches
10 feet by 10 feet by 7 feet

The latter are poor rooms, chiefly connected by each other and wholly in roof.

The ground floor of the house is very fair, all is clean; most part has been recently renovated.

The ceilings are low. The House is a good one of its kind.

Water Supply

This is provided over sink by pump in kitchen.

Separate Coal Barns are provided.
