58 Dunstable Road Flitwick
58 Dunstable Road April 2017
58 Dunstable Road has the look of an old farm house. It was listed by English Heritage in May 1985 as Grade II, of special interest. The listing dates the house to the 18th century, though the windows are all 20th century. It is built of red brick and has a clay tiled roof and comprises two storeys.
The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the house [DV1/C272/39] found that it was owned and occupied by C Sharpe - possibly the Charles Sharpe listed in Kelly's Directory for 1928 as a market gardener. Accommodation comprised two reception rooms, a hall, a kitchen, a dairy and three bedrooms. Outside was a weather-boarded and tiled coal barn. The valuer commented: “Very deceptive, all front” and “Right on road”.
