The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting 37 Windmill Road [DV1/C273/28] found that it was owned by C Sharp. The tenant was hairdresser Edward Hart, whose rent was 11/6 per week.

Accommodation comprised a reception room, a kitchen, a scullery and the shop, with three bedrooms upstairs. The shop measured 15 feet by 12 feet. Hart also rented and adjoining weather-boarded and tiled motor cycle shed and bicycle repair shop measuring 15 feet 6 inches by 12 feet for an additional three shillings per week. The valuer noted: “Also sells cycle utensils”.

Directories for Bedfordshire were not published every year but every few years from the early to mid-19th century until 1940. Edward Hart appears in directories from 1924 to 1928. Directories of 1931 to 1936 list a Ronald Corbett Ashby, shopkeeper in Windmill Road, though the number fof the property is not listed. The directory for 1940 lists C Wakeley and Son, grocer at Number 37.
