Bedfordshire County Council became Local Education Authority for the county in 1903, following the Education Act 1902. In 1904 the County Surveyor reported on the condition of all the council and voluntary schools in the county under LEA control, excluding those on Bedford and Luton Boroughs which had their own executive arrangements. The surveyor set out his report in the format below.

Owner: Earl Brownlow

This is a good brick and tiled building, lofty, well lighted, and ventilated by windows.

Warming is by a stove and pipe.

School Room measures 50 3 inches by 17 feet by 14 feet to 21 feet.

Centre lights [i.e. windows], also two Gable pivot lights, open for ventilation.

The floor is in fair order.

Internal cleansing, slight repairs, whitening, colouring, painting, cleaning and touching up stained and varnished work, are necessary to all the premises.

Cloak Room. 8 feet by 8 feet by 9 feet 3 inches.

This needs same attention.

Offices.

These are pan trapped closets which with the urinal, are connected wit ha system of drainage taking house drains to a dumb well, constructed upon the Common, about 70 feet distant.

Coal Barns are provided for School and House.

Water Supply.

This is by draw bucket from Well.

House.

(House, I find, does not go with School)

This is a four roomed house, having also a Scullery, Barn, and Closet as above. Sizes of rooms: 14 feet by 13 feet.

It is well lighted, but needs cleaning, repairing and renewing all through.

A large garden surrounds the house.

External repairs and painting were in hand. The work was being done by the Estate Workmen.

Generally speaking, these premises are well cared for and maintained.
