Synehurst February 2016

The cottage today called Synehurst was listed by the former Department of Environment in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. It is thought to date from the late 18th century and is of cob construction, covered in roughcast and colour-washed. It is thatched and comprises one storey and attics. It has a 20th century cross-wing and flat-roofed one storey extension to the rear [BorBTP/79/871].

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the thatched cottage found it owned and occupied by A Whitmore. The cottage comprised a living room and a kitchen with two bedrooms above. Two weather-boarded sheds stood outside, one thatched and the other tiled. The valuer considered it “not so good” as the more modern properties to the south to which it was semi-detached. He commented: “Very old and dilapidated”.
