Anglo-Saxon Flitwick

The Bedfordshire Historic Environment Record [HER] contains information on the county’s historic buildings and landscapes and summaries of each entry can now be found online as part of the Heritage Gateway website. The published list of sites for Flitwick includes two of Anglo-Saxon date.

There is evidence for an early Anglo-Saxon settlement off Hinksley Road in the shape of two loomweights of 7th century or earlier date and a well, a pit and two ditches lying perpendicular to a Roman track which suggests it may have been a surviving settlement from Roman times, linked with the Ruxox Farm Roman site [HER 20127]. A copper alloy hooked tag, perhaps from the 9th to 12th centuries has also been found in Flitwick [HER 18599].
