Salford School about 1912 [Z50/98/8]
Bedfordshire County Council became Local Education Authority for the county in 1903, following the Education Act 1902. In 1904 the CountySurveyor reported on the condition of all the council and voluntary schools in the county under LEA control, excluding those on Bedford and Luton Boroughs which had their own executive arrangements. The surveyor's report on Salford School [E/SA2/1/1] took the form below.
HULCOTE AND SALFORD SCHOOL AND HOUSE (NATIONAL)
This is a well-built brick and tile building, well cared for, bright and airy.
Schoolroom. 33 feet by 18 feet by 11 feet to 18 feet.
Lighting by two, four-light, large windows.
Ventilation by four Pivot lights, and three ceiling openings.
Four Tobin Tubes and an Exhaust Ventilator are necessary.
Heating is by a Stove.
This room is in fair condition.
Lobby. 17 feet by 5 feet 8 inches by 7 feet 8 inches.
Lighting is by glazed panels in door; the glass needs repairing, as does also the tiled floor.
More light and air are necessary.
Porch. 10 feet by 3 feet 6 inches by 9 feet 6 inches.
The boarded roof should be painted, and the paving repaired.
A new oak sill to the front door is necessary.
Offices. Two Privies and Urinal for boys are on the N. E. blank wall, also two Privies for girls. These were very clean on my visit, as was also the one belonging to the House.
Playgrounds. No playgrounds are provided. The children play on the road.
Water Supply. No drinking water is provided. A rain water tank and pump is necessary.
A Barn is needed for the School coals; this can be placed near to boys' and girls' Offices.
House
This has a Parlour 11 feet 6 inches by 11 feet 6 inches by 7 feet 7 inches
Kitchen 11 feet 6 inches by 11 feet by 7 feet 7 inches.
Scullery 9 feet by 6 feet
Pantry 5 feet 6 inches by 4 feet 6 inches
Hall and Stairway 12 feet 6 inches by 4 feet 6 inches.
The latter is very dark. More light and air are necessary
Three Bedrooms 13 feet by 10 feet
12 feet by 12 feet
12 feet by 10 feet 3 inches.
The house is perfectly kept in cleanliness and good order. It is many years since any renovation was done. The ceilings need cleansing and whitening, walls papering, and paint renewing.
The Front Bedroom needs a side light; a new window should be provided in the S. W. wall.
A new grate is needed in the back Bedroom.
House Coal Barn and Privy
The brickwork needs repairing, and a new brick floor laying.
External Repairs and Painting
Defective walling of all kinds, tiling, roofs, eaves, trough, rain water pipes, and paving about back door need generally restoring.
A floor should be laid in and about Offices and Barn, and all painting renewed.
