The Hedges February 2016
The Hedges February 2016

The cottage today called The Hedges was listed by the former Department of Environment in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. The listing describes it as being 18th century. It has colour-washed roughcast over a timber frame with a thatched roof.and comprises one storey and attics. There is a one-storey 20th century extension to the north gable end.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the thatched cottage [DV1/C168/10] found it was owned and occupied by F Whitmore. It comprised a living room and a kitchen with two bedrooms on the first floor. There was also a weather-boarded and tiled lean-to shed. The valuer commented: “Old and dilapidated”.

In 2008 the cottage was for sale. The particulars [Z449/2/28] describe it as containing a porch, a living room, a kitchen/breakfast room, a rear lobby, a shelved utility cupboard and a bathroom on the ground floor with two bedrooms above.
