Upper Gravenhurst Before 1086
The Bedfordshire Historic Environment Record [HER] contains information on the county’s historic buildings and landscapes and summaries of each entry can now be found online as part of the Heritage Gateway website. Cropmarks are found in growing crops, which grow at different rates due to ditches, buried walls etc. beneath the soil. Two cropmarks in Upper Gravenhurst may indicte prehistoric settlement.
North of Town Farm is a small oval cropmark [HER 14764]. In the northern part of Upper Gravenhurst are two possible enclosures on a ridge [HER 14765]. One of the se is D-shaped and partly disturbed by quarrying, the other is roughly rectangular. Without excavation it is impossible to say if these truly are prehistoric sites and, if they are, to which era they belong.
