The Red House, Houghton Regis

The Red House is a 17th century timber-framed, two-story brick house on the north west corner of the green in Houghton Regis. The Red House on the Green is the oldest brick building in the town. The property was previously owned by the Whitehead family who had called it “Strangers”. Thomas Whitehead claims in his will to have been born there, but no baptismal entry can be traced for him.

The property was Grade II listed on 29th January 1973 and is listed as:

“C17. Timber-framed with red brick nogging, facade refaced in red brick. Two storeys and attics. Old clay tile roof. Two gabled dormers. Two sash windows with glazing bars; central stained glass window. Modern porch.”

In 2016 Central Bedfordshire Council was granted planning permission to build All Saints View, an independent living scheme for people aged 55 and over. Part of the planning permission included listed building consent to renovate the Red House. This has been completed. Planning also made a change of use from housing to commercial.
