2 Stratford Road is an attractive and obviously old property. It stands in part of Stratford called Chesterfield which was occupied by a Romano-British town.

It was listed by the former Department of Environment in December 1979 as Grade II, of special interest. The department dated the property to the 17th or early 18th century and is constructed of colour washed roughcast over a timber frame. It stands gable end on to the road, has one storey and attics and a tiled roof. A one storey extension stands against the north gable end.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Sandy, like most of the county, was assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting 2 Stratford Road [DV1/C148/106] found it owned, like most of Stratford, by Viscount Peel and occupied by F. W. Robinson who paid rent of £7/9/- per annum. This sum had been set thirty three years previously. The 1st Viscount Peel had purchased part of Sandy Manor estate in 1858.

The house stood in just under half an acre. Accommodation comprised two living rooms, a washhouse and pantry with three bedrooms in the attics above. Outside stood an earth closet. The valuer commented “Very old and cramped”. Water came from Brittain’s Yard (i.e. the yard belonging to 4 Stratford Road) and the property had “no Gas or Convenience”.
