Merkur Slots

65-67 High Street, 2024

Earliest records show that William Woodroffe (trade unknown but possibly a Cordwainer) was the first known occupant in the early 1800’s who was then followed by Edward Jones, a Boot and Shoemaker from c.1820’s onwards. Jones ran the business until the late 1860’s when his wife and then daughter (both named Mary Ann Jones) took charge.

By 1881 the shop had been taken over by George Shaw, a Watch Maker, Jeweller and Optician who would stay until 1911.

In 1914 H Curry and Sons (later Currys Ltd), Cycle and Motorcycle Agents, became the occupants. They would stay until 1957.

In recent times Sanda, Ladies Oufitters, were present from 1963 – 1976 and were followed by Showboat Casino Slots (2008 – 2009), Cashino (2012 – 2020) and Merkur (2023 – 2024) these latter three being Amusement Arcades.
