Dean Croft Upper Dean

Dean Croft May 2011

Dean Croft stands in Brook Lane. It was listed by the former Department of Environment in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. The department dated the property to the 18th century. It is constructed of colour-washed roughcast over a timber frame and brick and is thatched. It comprises one storey and attics. A 20th century extension was added to the north gable end.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. It is likely that Dean, like most of the rest of the county was assessed in 1927. The valuer visiting Dean Croft found it owned and occupied by H. Brown.

The cottage stood in just over a third of an acre and comprised a living room, a kitchen and two bedrooms above. Outside stood a corrugated iron shed and two barns. The valuer commented: “Very low. Thatch bad. Big slope”.
