52 High Street

This property was researched by John Thurston

First known occupant was Henry Robert Shelton in 1847, a carver, gilder, paper hanger and brush manufacturer. His son, James Shelton, had taken over the business by 1885 and remained until 1901. Thomas Coombs, a lace manufacturer, was then on site until 1904.

From 1905 the Rose family, firstly Thomas Rose and then his son Edward Paine Rose, began running a drapery business from No 50 and 52 High Street. Gradually acquiring the shops around them to encompass No’s 46 – 54 High Street, the business expanded to become a large Department Stores trading as E P Rose and Son Ltd up until 1973.

It then became Debenhams from 1973/4 – 2021. Currently the shop, which now encompasses No’s 42 – 54 High Street, remains vacant.
