121 High Street

This property was researched by John Thurston

The original 121 High Street was probably erected in the late 1860’s. The first known occupant was James Atkins, a grocer, who is shown living in the property with his family from 1871 up to around 1885. By 1887 he had entered a partnership with John Smith who is subsequently shown living there. The firm of Atkins and Smith continue until at least 1915. After that date the stores were taken over by the International Stores/International Tea Co’s Stores Ltd who are listed from 1920 right up to 1976. Following this the site then became occupied by Amusement Arcades (Showboat/Reels/Golden Ages) who are listed at the joint address of 119 – 121 High Street, with the current occupant from 2018 – 2025 being Creams Gelato Dessert Co.
