List of Rectors at Cockayne Hatley

Advowson

According to the Victoria County History published in 1908 the church first appears as part of the original endowment of Newnham Priory which was founded in 1166 by Simon Beauchamp. The prior and convent held the advowson in ‘pure and perpetual alms of the barony of Bedford’ and they were given a licence in 1327 to impropriate the church. Following the Dissolution the rectory became the property of the crown until it was granted to Thomas Reeve in 1564. In 1595 it was transferred to John Cockayne, lord of Cockayne Hatley manor, and it has remained in the gift of the lords of the property since then.
