Crinkle Crankle Wall, Home Farm, Cockayne Hatley
The garden wall at Home Farm forms a boundary on the north side of a walled orchard and is grade II listed as it is the only known example of a crinkle crankle wall in Bedfordshire. The listing describes it as being approximately 2 metres high and 60 metres long comprising ten zigzags of red bricks laid in Flemish bond with plain brick coping. The main construction is late eighteenth century with nineteenth century repairs comprising a short straight section in the centre.
Crinkle crankle walls, also known as crinkum crankum, serpentine, ribbon or wavy walls, alternate convex and concave walls to provide stability and provide greater strength than the same thickness of straight wall without the need for buttresses.
