Not all of Bedfordshire's sporting traditions have survived: Bedford Races took place at Cow Meadow, Elstow between 1730 and 1873. (ref: X37/40)

The Duke of Bedford's bill for drinks at Bedford Races totalled £42, 19 shillings and 8 pence in 1753. £39 12 shillings of that was for 33 gallons of punch made from rum and brandy. Philberds or filberts are hazelnuts (BLARS ref: R Box770)
