Why is this document at Bedfordshire & Luton Archives?
We already had a less well annotated version of this 1843 plan ref.LL17/295, but a researcher using ref. LL17/278 , the household accounts of John Hatfield Brooks of Flitwick 1888 - 1893 found this plan of the accommodations of the ship Carnatic filed under 1888, with more annotations than LL17/295 and a note that it sailed from Spithead Feb 7th 1843 and arrived at Calcutta 25th July same year.
On the plan ref.LL17/295 John Thomas Brooks has made a note: 'By this ship dearest Johnnie [John Hatfield Brooks] made his first voyage to India.' Only a few of the cabins have names written in, indicating it is an earlier plan than that found in LL17/278. J T Brooks mentions trying to see Johnnie sale on the Carnatic and Johnnie's eventual departure in his diary [Bedfordshire Historical Record Society Volume 66].
The Lyall Muniments [ref.LL] relating chiefly to the Flitwick Estate of the Brooks family, were deposited here in 1953.
